A painting of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe set the record for being the most expensive American work of art ever sold after being bought for a whopping $195 million (over R3.1 billion) at auction.
According The Wall Street Journalthe sale took place on Monday, May 9, 2022 at the famous New York auction house Christie’s. It was made by legendary artist Andy Warhol in 1964.
WHO BOUGHT MARILYN MONROE’S ICONIC PAINTING?
The painting, titled “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn,” was one of five versions of the portrait painted by Warhol two years after Marilyn Monroe’s death, each with a different color palette. The buyer has been identified as Larry Gagosian, an American art dealer and owner of a chain of galleries.
Proceeds from the sale will apparently go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation of Zurich, based in Switzerland, which works to establish health care and education programs for children around the world.
Earlier this year, George Frei, Chairman of the Board of the Thomas and Doris Amman Foundation, said of the painting: “Marilyn the wife is gone; the terrible circumstances of his life and death are forgotten. Only the enigmatic smile remains that connects her to another mysterious smile of a distinguished lady, the Mona Lisa.
Previously, New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 skull painting was considered the most expensive artwork sold after fetching $110 million (R1.7 billion) also at the of an auction.
