Service Kids T-Shirt Design Challenge

Armed forces charity Help for Heroes is asking Welsh schoolchildren to design a t-shirt to be worn by its team of veterans when climbing Pen y Fan later this year.

Last year, a team of six veterans representing Wales won the National Charity Virtual Spring Games. They had such a great time working together that they stayed in touch and decided to take on a new challenge this year.

The team included West Sussex-based ‘ringer’, former Royal Marine James Cobby, 30, who is confined to a wheelchair following an accident which resulted in severe brain damage, but which defies the predictions of doctors ever since. James stepped in to fill the void left by a last-minute withdrawal and has since been considered an honorary Welshman.

The group will now climb Pen y Fan on June 15, with James using a specially designed all-terrain wheelchair, and children from SSCE Cymru (Supporting Service Children in Education) are invited to design the team t-shirt.

One of the organizers, Nick Vanderpump, Manager of Help for Heroes’ Sport, Activity & Fellowship, said: “We have decided to open the competition to SSCE children, as April is the month of the military child.

“We’re looking for the winning design to incorporate the Welsh word for ‘inspire’ – Ysbrydoli – and a particular feature, or features, related to ascension: that it’s a Help for Heroes military veterans team; they climb Pen y Fan; it’s a Welsh team; and they are now great friends.

“The winning design will be made into a T-shirt for the team to wear during the climb and the artist will also receive a T-shirt with their own design. If it proves popular, we may even produce more for sell them in our online store.

The five-person team taking on Pen y Fan includes Cobby, from Shoreham-by Sea; Liam Mountain, of Bridgend; Matt Neve, Swansea; Jason Tamplin, Newport; and Donna Davies, who lives in Hengoed.

T-shirt contest entries, which must be no smaller than A4, should be scanned and emailed to [email protected] before noon April 22, or original posted on Op Ysbrydoli Competition, Help for Heroes, 14 Parkers Close, Downton Business Centre, Salisbury, Wilts SP5 3RB, on the same date.
